A human rights lawyer from northeast China was sentenced on November 27 to seven years in prison for taking Falun Gong practitioners as clients and presenting legal arguments that the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign against the spiritual practice is illegal under Chinese law.

Three years ago tomorrow, Mr. Ji Liewu, the 39-year-old Director of China Nonferrous Metals Corp, had settled into bed for a good night's sleep in his home in Beijing. Little did he know it would be his last spent at home. At 5 a.m. the next morning, 30 police officers banged on his door and, much to the shock and dismay of Mr. Ji and his wife, proceeded to ransack their home. Like many Falun Gong volunteers throughout the country that night, Mr. Ji was then violently hauled away and held at a local police station.
