Tan Yongie is seen recovering from his third-degree burns in a Houston hospital in 2001. He managed to escape from the Chinese forced labor camp where he was tortured by the guards with a heated iron rod. The rod was pressed to his legs over a dozen times for his refusal to recant his spiritual beliefs. Doctors in Houston said that the burns were so deep, they reached the muscle tissue. Other tortures he endured included frequent beatings, and being handcuffed and hung from a window by his wrists for five hours, while his feet hung off the ground. His wrists were covered in blood from the torture.
