In November 2000, Zhou Yanjie and his family were harassed and arrested when their home was illegally broken into, searched and ransacked by members of the Halahai Township government.  Their personal effects were confiscated, and they were refused any documentation for the illegal search and seizure.  On December 20, 2001, police officials again broke into their home when Zou, his wife and mother were taken to the police station.  Zou escaped and hid in the woods for over 10 days without food or water during the cold winter.  By the time he was recaptured, his condition was very weak.  When Zou’s sister came for him, his feet were seriously frostbitten and had to be amputated.
