Please Rescue My Husband,
Zhang Yu Hui

My name is Celia Wang. My husband, Zhang Yu Hui, and I have two wonderful children, a little girl and boy. In China, we both had good jobs, and had a simple, happy life.

My husband started practicing Falun Dafa [or Falun Gong - an ancient Chinese spiritual practice - ed.] in 1997 and I started practicing the following year. As Falun Dafa practitioners, we lived according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance and that improved and enriched our lives beyond measure. Our dream was shattered when Jiang Zemin decided he had to destroy Falun Gong.

It all started when my husband called a press conference in the city of Macao after the events of April 25th, 1999. The purpose of the conference was to clarify the facts that Falun Dafa practitioners who had gone to Beijing to appeal to the government were in fact exercising their rights as citizens as allowed by the country’s laws.

After the conference, my husband was put under surveillance by the Information Department. After July 20, 1999, the day Jiang banned the practice, my husband started using his written name, He Shi Lao, to publish articles on a Chinese Website explaining the truth about Falun Gong, and exposing Jiang's illegal actions. In November 1999, due to this activity, on the way back to Macao, he was arrested in Zhu Hai and was sent to Kai Ping detention center in Guang Dong. Thanks to international appeals, he was released on December 25th, 1999.

However, on December 18th, 2000, my husband suddenly disappeared in Zhu Hai. Only after a whole month, Jan 2001, the police bureau of Zhu Hai finally informed me that my husband had been arrested under the excuse of “trying to overthrow the government”. On December 19th 2002, at 11 PM, Macao police bureau forced me to open my door without a warrant under the excuse of my giving false evidence. My son and I were sent to the police bureau offices and detained for three hours. Following that, my movements were being watched. After ten months of illegal detention, they finally opened a court case against my husband on Oct 11, 2001. However, the Zhu Hai Court judge adjudicated that the case was paradoxical and could not be held. Despite this decision, the Zhu Hai police bureau continued to illegally detain my husband in their custody.

The illegal detention of my husband put the whole family burden on me. Due to a lot of pressure and distress, I lost my job and could not be re-employed as no one dared to hire me. Friends, who tried to help, were looked unfavorably by the police. My children and I, one five and the other only two, were left without any means of survival. My life in Macao was made impossible and although painful I had to make the decision to move away for the sake of my children. Tearfully, I left my daughter with relatives of mine, and with my friends’ assistance, traveled to the US with my son.

My husband is not guilty of any crime. He is being persecuted for practicing Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. It is the Chinese government and its head, Jiang Zemin, who are committing crimes against innocent law-abiding citizens and causing so much suffering and tearing apart so many families. According to incomplete estimates, over 450 people have been tortured to death and tens of thousands of people have been illegally detained or sent to mental hospitals or jailed. They have been subjected to extreme suffering and inhuman torture methods, as has my husband Zhang Yu Hui.

I appeal to all kind hearted people who cherish and care for basic human rights to take a stand and stop this unprecedented brutal, physical and mental persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners by Jiang Zemin and the government of China. Let us do this together so that thousands of Falun Dafa practitioners in China can have the right to live with their families in peace and exercise their right of belief.
